The following pages contain courses I am building with the hope that I will teach them in the future. The ideas for these courses come from my experiences in academia. During my time in graduate school I found myself thinking at great length about what was working in my classes and what I would do differently. I also spent time discussing with my peers what areas in art were not being addressed. I feel it is important to maintain an active awareness of the changing needs of students in order to foster a meaningful student teacher relationship.
I am currently interested in pursuing more information on the use of craft in contemporary art. It seems to be in many galleries and museums but I feel that it has not been adequately discussed. Part of this interest comes from my own desire to expand upon the materials I use in my own artwork. When an artist discovers a new material it is a bit like learning a new language. I have been researching a whole new vocabulary to express myself with. I would enjoy sharing and exchanging ideas about what new and unusual discoveries other artists have made.
I have witnessed an overwhelming change in photography from the time I first started college in 1999. It has hatched onto an entirely different creature. I have come to understand that this change has caused a divergence among artists. In the beginning, many photographers fought the digital age well others welcomed it. Now that it is here I have realized that we are not loosing our past we are gaining opportunities. I want to help future artists understand how different the out come can be by taking some extra time to do things the old fashioned way once and a while. I would enjoy the opportunity to open up doors for aspiring artists willing to explore the unknown. |
