COURSE DESCRIPTION

Many contemporary artists use non-traditional tools and materials in their art-making practices.   This course will investigate the use of high-profile materials, creative tools and unusual processes in contemporary art.   Students will practice working with unexpected materials and over coming the challenges of using materials they are unfamiliar with.   They will be asked to discus the implications of using high-profile materials and share their experiences working with different materials.   In this course we will look at the work of artist such as, Janine Antoni, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, and Do Ho Suh.
 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Cultivate an understanding of historically relevant artists using high-profile materials, creative tools and unusual processes in contemporary art.
  • Practice developing an idea, researching, brainstorming and following it through from mock-up to a finish work of art.
  • Participate in activities that identify and describe the skills and techniques necessary to create a successful artwork using high-profile materials.
  • Develop an understanding of the implications of material choices in creating and viewing artwork.
  • Create several works of art that shows a willingness to explore and over come challenges.
  • Develop an understanding of the limits and advantages of working with unconventional and unfamiliar materials.
  • Participate in discussions that develop an ability to critically analyze and discuss ones own work and the work of others.

ASSIGNMENTS

Each student will be asked to create 3-5 projects depending on the length and frequency of the class.  Each project presented for critique will be accompanied by an artist statement and 1 page project description detailing the artist process and research related to the work.   There will be require reading from various sources.   For each reading students will be asked to write a short simple response summarizing their thoughts about what they read.   Class participation is required and will be part of the evaluation process.
