COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course will focus on the use of textiles and related techniques in contemporary art.   We will look at the work of artists such as, Consuelo Jimenez Underwood, Kent Henricksen, and Tracy Emin.   Students will be encouraged to expand on their art making skills by incorporate tradition craft materials into their work in resourceful ways. Student will be required to use multiple materials and processes thru-out the course.  

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Develop an awareness of historically relevant artist using traditional craft materials in contemporary art.
  • Participate in activities that identify and describe the skills and techniques necessary to create a successful work of art using traditional craft materials.
  • Develop an understanding of the limits and advantages of working with unconventional and unfamiliar materials.
  • Practice developing an idea, researching, brainstorming and following it through from mock-up to a finish work of art.
  • Develop an understanding of the implications of material choices in creating and viewing artwork.
  • Participate in discussions that develop an ability to critically analyze and discuss ones own work and the work of others.

ASSIGNMENTS

Each student will be asked to create 3-5 projects depending on the length and frequency of the class.  Each project presented for critique will be accompanied by an artist statement and 1 page project description detailing the artist process and research related to the work.   There will be require reading from various sources.   For each reading students will be asked to write a short simple response summarizing their thoughts about what they read.   Class participation is required and will be part of the evaluation process.
