COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course focuses on the use of photography in conceptual art. It will allow both photographers and artist who normally work in other medium to hone their ability to express a concept using photographic images. Students are encouraged to use both traditional and digital photographic methods in their work. This course will enable students to explore several conceptual works during the course or focus on one idea the enter time. Well technical skill is always important, successful presentation of concept will be the many focus of the course. We will be looking at the work of artists such as, Nikki S Lee, Barbara Kruger, and Hiroshi Sugimoto.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Cultivate an understanding of historically relevant conceptual artists.
- Practice developing a concept, researching, brainstorming and following it through from idea to a finish work of art.
- Participate in discussions that enrich and challenge ones understanding of conceptual art.
- Create several works of art that shows an ability to translate a concept into an accessible work of art.
- Participate in discussions that develop an ability to critically analyze and discuss ones own work and the work of others.
ASSIGNMENTS
Each student will be asked to create 3-5 projects depending on the length and frequency of the class. Each project presented for critique will be accompanied by an artist statement and 1 page project description detailing the artist process and research related to the work. There will be require reading from various sources. For each reading students will be asked to write a short simple response summarizing their thoughts about what they read. Class participation is required and will be part of the evaluation process.
